Introduction

This guide is intended to serve as a general introduction to researching nursing theory/theorists using both print and electronic resources. The literature of nursing theory primarily is found in books and journals. Dissertations may also be useful. Many web sites have been developed that are devoted to the topic of nursing theory and nurse theorists. Select sites are included in this guide.

Finding books

Look for books in the PAC (SDSU Library online catalog), using the following LC Subject headings:

Also, try a search by words to broaden your search. General books on the subject of nursing theory/theorists are located on the 5th floor of the library under RT84.5.

To broaden a search to books available in other libraries while in the PAC:

  • click on "Repeat Search in Circuit" to search four campus catalogs (SDSU, USD, UCSD, CSU San Marcos); or
  • click on "Repeat Search in LINK+" (a catalog of collections from participating libraries in California and Nevada).

    Materials in Circuit and/or LINK+ may be requested online and will be delivered to the Circulation Desk at SDSU within a day (Circuit) to 3-4 business days (LINK+).

    Finding articles

    Use article indexes/databases to identify periodical or journal articles on nursing theories or models. The following article databases are accessible through the Library web pages, and also may be searched remotely from home or office.

    CINAHL- Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health. 1984-present.
    For nursing and allied health professionals, students, educators and researchers, CIHAHL provides full text for nearly 400 journals.

    Medline -- 1966-present.
    Provides authoritative information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE includes over 4,800 current biomedical journals.

    Nurses.info is a web site dedicated to the provision of quality health care information for the professional development of nurses and health professionals. It provides links to a range of educational and vocational information that will meet this outcome, including information on most Grand Nursing Theorists.

    Models and Theories of Nursing (Cardinal Stritch University Library)
    This subject page provides a bibliography that attempts to identify some of the sources of information for many of the major nursing theories/theorists. Checking the bibliographies in these publications will lead to additional books and articles on these nursing theorists.
