Introduction
Judaic studies is the academic study of the history, religion, culture(s), sociology, and literature of the Jewish people. It is inherently multidisciplinary and relies on a variety of texts, both ancient and modern. This guide will cover standard reference works, indexes, and databases in the field of Judaic studies.Top of page

Dictionaries and Encyclopedias
The Encyclopedia of Judaism, edited by Jacob Neusner and others.
BM 50 E63 1999 REF
3 volumes. Deals primarily with Judaism as a religion (both historical and modern)
and does not attempt to address at any length non-religious matters related
to the Jewish people.
Encyclopedia Judaica
DS 102.8 E496 2007 REF
22 volumes. This encyclopedia "provides a comprehensive
picture of all aspects of Jewish life and knowledge...." Extensive articles
and lengthy bibliographies. Also available online.
Encyclopedia Talmudica
BM 500.5 E613 REF
A 2 volume digest of halachic literature and Jewish law.
The Jewish Encyclopedia

12 volumes, originally published in the early 20th century, this encyclopedia
is now available on the Web. Though dated, it can be a useful resource for Judaic
studies.

Finding books
Look for books in the PAC (the library's online catalog). Use terms such as
"Judaism," "Bible," "Jews" etc., (depending on
your topic) under Subject. If you have trouble finding a relevant subject heading,
try the "Words" search option or check the Library of Congress Subject
Headings (LCSH) books for the proper subject term.
