Subject Directories
These sites are mostly human-generated databases of Web sites, arranged by
subject. They cover fewer resources than search engines but provide more focus
and guidance for the topics they cover and will usually refer you to the most
reliable Web sites. Use these to start searching or browsing for broad
topics, especially if you have only a general idea of what you are
looking for.

Search Engines
These sites are mostly computer-generated databases of Web sites. Most
also include a subject directory. They vary according to database size and
content, searching capabilities, and how they rank results. Use these to
search for unique keywords and limiting searches, especially if you know
exactly what you are looking for. Different search engines will give
you different results, so if one does not give you the results you hoped for,
try another.

Meta-Search Engines
These sites let you search several different search engines simultaneously
AND integrate the results from these search engines. Although none of
these cover all of the search engines, and they may give you only a
limited number of listings from each search engine, meta-search engines
can be a quick, useful supplement to search engines. Use these primarily
for simple searches.
