CALL FOR PAPERS:
Amazonian and Andean visual and sensorial worlds: comparison and new interpretative trends
focuses on approaches to the Andes and Amazonia from the visual and sensorial worlds that Amerindians frequent and create: creation and destruction of objects as spatial-temporal processes; the conceptual overlapping of materiality, embodiment and agency; the use of objects and images as producers of memory; the intersemiotic relations between visual, musical and verbal systems, especially in the field of ritual performance; synaesthetic experiences and the ways of seeing, hearing and sensing the universe; ethnographic and archaeological theories about figuration, abstraction and image and their socio-cosmological unfolding; the interpretation of systems of objects as populations and their implication for Amerindian socialities; the uses and meanings of foreign objects; the possible relations between surfaces and graphic patterns: patterns can constitute surfaces or they can build up, adhere or transform pre-existing surfaces. Meanings of plant domestication in the Americas: Evidences, processes, and implications.
interested in addressing more specifically the domestication processes and the socio-economic implications. We are therefore calling for case studies or review papers that address plant domestication processes and discuss its "meaning" through multiple approaches such as: processing and consumption residues (macro and microremains, dental calculus, coproliths, stomach and intestinal content); diet (stable isotopes, bone and tooth pathologies); agricultural fields and irrigation systems; iconography; storage structures; tools for agriculture, harvest and plant processing. We do not want to put emphasis on methodologies, but on their results to be able to address the question of human management of species and plant communities: did it lead to plant domestication or tending? Were these processes local, or did the plants come from other areas? Did these plants change the socio-economic structures of the groups, and to what extent? How did these plants integrate into the everyday life of American groups? Metropolitan Museum of Art's Radiance from the Rain Forest: Featherwork in Ancient Peru New York, NY - February 26, 2008–September 1, 2008)
n the Andean regions of ancient South America, the brilliantly colored feathers of Amazonian birds were a luxury that was much treasured and long used. From the third millennium B.C. onward, feathers served various ceremonial and secular purposes throughout pre-conquest Peruvian history. Radiant blues, yellows, reds, and greens embellished high-status apparel and accessories such as ear ornaments, pectorals, fans, headdresses, miniature ritual offerings, and large-scale hangings. Examples of them, drawn from public and private collections and the Museum’s own holdings, are on view. Visit: http://www.metmuseum.org/

Rethinking Class and Status in the Andes
Papers within this session may deal with issues such as: inter-period or inter-region differences in the production and performance of class in the Andes; whether and how warrior or religious "classes" relate to "classes" that were defined by economic practices or the control of resources; how inter-regional or inter-site heterarchical relations were linked to intra-regional or intra-site hierarchical organization; how class may be defined through ideological or symbolic criteria, more so than economic (e.g. Gramscian notions of class); how class distinctions may not necessarily be defined by the differential control of economic resources; the difference and relation between "class" and "status" distinctions in the Andes; the spatiality of social difference; the general applicability of Marxian models of "class" to non-market societies; links between emerging urbanism and emerging class distinctions; so-called Andean "modes" of production ("Asiatic", "Verticality","Oriental Despotism") and their assumptions o For more information contact: Steven B. Towards an International Inventory of Prehistoric Mines and Quarries
Despite the widespread presence of prehistoric extraction sites in the historic environment, many are overlooked or their importance unrecognised, thus placing them at risk. Although amongst the earliest examples of technology, they rarely receive World Heritage Site status, and some have no legal protection at all. Currently, catalogues are restricted to certain countries or particular stone types, but this is not universal. This initial symposium will work towards achieving a directory for those working in the field: contributions will provide an overview by country, region, or stone type, to begin to build an international inventory. Animating Archaeology: Of Subjects, Objects, and Alternative Ontologies
The purpose of this session is to critically explore the archaeological potential of "thinking through things," animating essences as transgressive, the idea of an essential equivalency between people and things, and the material dimensions of "life-force." Additional themes might include the question of "agency" and whether it can be usefully applied to things or even humans; and the encounter between animistic worldviews and recent theoretical models of the world as inherently in "flux."
