Journal rankings & impact factors
There are several methods for locating journal rankings.
1. The journal literature may include articles that identify top journals or rankings. Search the database in your discipline to find these articles (i.e., for psychology search PsycINFO). Use the Databases & Electronic Resources web page to identify appropriate databases.
2. For the sciences, consult these web sites.
High Impact Journals. Science Gateway.
Directory of links and resources for biomedical science and research. It is compiled by a group of scientists located in Europe and North America.in-cites Journals. Thomson.
Interviews, essays and rankings featuring highly cited journals in a variety of fields. Primarily science, but includes some social science.
3. General web search engines may also uncover journal ranking information.
Try the following search statement using Google:
"top * [discipline name] journals"
For example: "top * marketing journals" would retrieve "top ten marketing
journals," "top ranked marketing journals," and "top tier marketing journals."
Be sure to include the quotation marks and the * in your search statement.
4. The following books have some information.
Nisonger, T. (2003). Journal ranking studies. In Evaluation of library collections, access and electronic resources: A literature guide and annotated bibliography (pp. 207-230). Westport, CT: Libraries Unlimited.

PN 4836. J685 2002 Reference

5. The following article provides a good overview of journal rankings and other issues.
Rousseau, R. (2002). Journal evaluation: Technical and practical issues. Library Trends 50(3), 418-439.
6. Other tools to consider in this assignment are the periodical directories and guides to the literature in various disciplines.
Impact factors can be calculated in various ways. The easiest way to do this is to take a database that includes citations (like Web of Science, PsycINFO, or Academic Search Premier), divide the number of times a journal is cited (in a particular year or range of years) by the number of articles published in that journal for that time period, and the resulting quotient is the impact factor. It is somewhat more complex than this, but these are the basics.
Journal acceptance/rejection rates
The journal literature sometimes has articles written on this, and sometimes journals will publish their own acceptance rates. Search the databases in your discipline to find these articles (for example, for psychology search the database PsycINFO).
