Introduction

The Library subscribes to over 100 U.S. and foreign newspapers. Dailies from several major United States and a few California cities are retained in newsprint format up to three weeks. Older copies may be available electronically, on microfilm, microfiche or microprint. This guide will help you identify current and historical newspapers.

Finding books

the PAC
The catalog of the SDSU Library: books, periodical titles, many government publications and other materials in the SDSU Library. Articles in periodicals are not included.

To locate current and historical newspapers available in the SDSU library, do a LC Subject search and type newspapers, then Limit/Sort Search by MATERIAL type and choose NEWSPAPER from the list.

Ethnic NewsWatch. 1990 to present.

Factiva. (Best in Internet Explorer/Windows). Varies by title to present.
National and international business news and information sources, including Dow Jones and Reuters News wires and The Wall Street Journal.

LexisNexis Academic. 1980s to present.
National and international news articles, and business, legal and reference information. Full text.

Los Angeles Times. 1881-1985
Cover-to-cover full-image archive.

New York Times. 1851-2002.
Cover-to-cover full-image archive.

NewsBank NewsFile Collection. 1992 to present.
U.S. regional and national newspapers, wire services, and broadcasts covering social, economic, environmental, government, sports, people, the arts, health, and science issues and events. Full text.

ProQuest Newspapers. 1980s to present.

National and international news articles, and business, legal and reference information; includes transcripts from ABC, CBS, CNBC, CNN, Fox News, NPR, NBC and more. Full text.

Television News Archive. 1989 to present.
Network evening news broadcasts from the major U.S. national broadcast networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN, and more than 9,000 hours of special news-related programming including ABC's Nightline. Free to use, but user must register. Video tapes can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

Electronic & digital editions

American Memory Project. Library of Congress.
The American Memory provides free and open access to digitized collections of written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music. Many of the collections include digitized newspapers.

The Library has several newspapers that have been indexed for significant parts of their runs. They are listed below in order of dates indexed (longest to shortest). Consult the individual titles for more information on the indexes and title changes of the newspaper in question.
