Online Map Collections

These are online collections of maps and atlases that are good places to start looking for online maps.

The World Factbook CIA.
Select "Reference Maps" to view the online version of the Reference Maps found in the back of the printed Factbook.

CIESIN Maps Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).
An anonymous FTP site with maps of U.S. population density, housing unit density, and land cover using satellite data.

Color Landform Atlas of the United States Johns Hopkins University.
This site provides maps of all 50 States and the Continental U.S. Maps include Shaded relief maps, County maps, Satellite images, and PostScript maps. Links to other resources are also included.

Map Stats Census Bureau.
Creates U.S. and state outline maps as well as providing access to 1990 Census information, USA Counties General Profiles, County Business Patterns Economic Profiles and other information about the states and counties.

Maps in the News University of Minnesota.
Includes links to electronic maps of areas featured in current news stories.

National Geographic Map Machine National Geographic Society.
Online world atlas. Includes political maps, physical maps, and satellite images, as well as information about individual countries.

The Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection University of Texas at Austin.
Contains a large collection of electronic maps, including historical and thematic maps.

Street Maps

These sites create street-level maps based on address, city, or zip code information for the United States. Many also give driving directions from point A to point B.

MapBlast From Vicinity Corporation.
Creates U.S. street maps showing a particular street address or city. Also includes driving directions.

MapQuest From Geosystems.
Includes U.S. street maps, city maps, and an interactive atlas of the world.

MapsOnUs
Includes U.S. street maps and route planners.

Yahoo Maps
Create U.S. street maps using an address, street, or city. Also includes point to point driving directions.

Interactive Maps

These sites allow you to create maps based on options given. Most sites allow a choice of variables (population, income, etc.) as well as geography (counties, census tracts, etc.).

Demographic Data Viewer From the Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).
Creates thematic maps of the U.S., states, counties, county subdivisions, tracts, and block groups. Select up to 25 variables (out of 225), but only one is mapped.

Digital Chart of the World From Penn State University Libraries.
Creates maps of individual countries showing boundaries or other features.

MapObjects From ESRI.
Creates thematic maps of U.S. states and counties with 16 population variables.

Map Viewer From the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center.
Creates maps with various features, projections, and scales. Includes the world, but U.S. maps are more detailed.

Online Map Creation
Using "Generic Mapping Tools" (GMT), this site creates maps from latitude and longitude coordinates. Maps can include bathymetry, topography, national boundaries, rivers and channels, cities, etc. Also available are plate tectonic features such as Ridges, Trenches, Faults, and Magnetic Lineations.

San Diego / Tijuana Interactive Atlas From SANDAG.
This site allows you to create thematic maps of the San Diego/Tijuana area showing one of 20 topics (such as population, age, employment, etc.) in English or Spanish.

SanGIS Interactive Map From SanGIS.
Creates maps of San Diego county based on the features chosen. The 34 features available include roads, cities, ZIP codes, congressional districts, as well as planning, school, and environmental information. Also includes an address locator.

TIGER Mapping Service From the Census Bureau.
Creates thematic maps of U.S. states, MAs, counties, Congressional districts, places, tracts, and block groups. Includes 18 census variables, such as population density and family income. There is also a gazetteer to search by place or zip code.
