Geographic Information System (GIS) Software
See also: Map Collection
Geographic Information System (GIS) software allows users to create maps and analyze spatial data. It is a useful tool but requires time and effort to produce a finished map or complete an analysis. In order to create a map, the appropriate data must be available in a useable format. Not all data is available for use with the GIS, so it is important that you consult the map librarian for information about the feasibility of your project.
First time users will need to make an appointment for consultation and preliminary instruction.
Software:
The library provides San Diego State University students, faculty, and staff with access to ArcView software provided through the University's site license. Access is available by appointment only.
Data:
The library owns a number of spatial and statistical data sets that can be used with GIS. See the GIS Data page for some examples of spatial data that is available. Other data is also available. Please contact the map librarian for more information.
Printing:
Printing is available on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Black and white printing is .10/page. All printing requires a copy card in order to pay for it. For information about copy cards, see the DART machines section on the Copy Service page.
Assistance:
The map librarian is available by appointment to provide basic instruction and assistance with GIS projects. Assistance is available for common tasks such as:
- identifying and preparing the appropriate data
- setting up the initial base map
- using the software's analysis functions
- displaying and printing the map
