Use this index to identify US treaties currently in effect. This publication is arranged by country and then by subject. The text of the treaties can be found in the sources listed in the "Text of Treaties - Contemporary"

This is a subject and cumulative index to the UN Treaty Series. Text of Treaties - Contemporary

Treaties and Other International Acts Series (TIAS). 1946-ongoing.
Location: S 9.10:TIAS# Reference/US
When first printed, the text of the treaty is issued in "slip" form (single, unbound), given a TIAS number and published in this series. The TIAS numbers are assigned in order as each treaty text is printed. The "slip" versions are later collected and bound in the United States Treaties and Other International Agreements (UST) series (S 9.12:vol.#). Beginning in 1996 the slip treaties will not be reissued in UST.

There is a subject index in the back of each volume. A cumulative index for 1950-1970 is part of the UST set and includes a country and subject index and a chronology. English and some foreign language texts. Beginning in 1996 bound volumes are no longer distributed to depository libraries. Use Treaties and Other International Acts (S 9.10:TIAS#) for TIAS numbers after 10877.

Text of Treaties - Electronic Format

Many treaties are not available in an electronic format. The United Nations has a fee-based database for United Nations treaties, but the SDSU Library does not subscribe to the database. Try the following web sites to locate treaties that are available in electronic format.

Multilaterals Project. The Fletcher School. Tufts University.
Includes the full text international multilateral conventions and other instruments in the areas of the environment, human rights, commerce and trade, laws of war and arms control. Most treaties are from the second half of this century, with a few older significant historical treaties.
Guide to Law Online, Collections of Multi-national Conventions. US Library of Congress.
Provides links to electronic text collections and guides on how to research treaties.

US Indian Treaties

Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties. 7 vols. 1972 edition. (Also referred to as "Kappler.")

Contains laws and executive orders as well as treaties. Volume 2 has the full text of treaties from 1778-1871. Volumes 1, 2-7 have the full text of laws, executive orders and proclamations through 1971. There are other useful tables and listings claims, revised spelling of names, tribal listings, and statistics. Volume 4 contains a subject index for volumes 1-4; volume 5 has its own index; and volume 7 has an index for volumes 6-7.

US Tax Treaties

Publication 901 - US Tax Treaties. Current.
Provides a summary of tax treaties between the US and individual countries. To locate the full text use the "List of Tax Treaties." The table provides the TIAS number (S 9.12:TIAS# Gov Pubs/US) and a citation to the reprint in Internal Revenue Service Cumulative Bulletin (T 22.25:# Gov Pubs/US). The "List of Tax Treaties" table is also included in Publication 515 - Withholding of Tax on Nonresident Aliens and Foreign Corporations.
