Introduction

This guide provides a strategy for locating government technical reports. It lists major indexes for identifying technical reports and will help you determine if the reports are available in the SDSU Library or on the Internet. Locating technical reports can be difficult, please ask a librarian for assistance if you do not find what you need.

Atomic Energy Commission (AEC)

OpenNet Database. Documents declassified after October 1994-ongoing.

Indexes some AEC records located in the National Archives and Records Administration and the Department of Energy (DOE) Headquarters' History Division. The index includes records that predate the Manhattan Project.
The DOE Test Videoclip Database provides access to video of nuclear weapons test films. Clips are available online and complete videos can be purchased. Search by keyword.

Bureau of Mines (BuMINES)

The Bureau of Mines produced technical literature relating to the mineral industry and its mining, milling, and exploration. It was abolished in 1996 by the 104th Congress and its functions were transferred to other agencies. Mining health and safety concerns were transferred to National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Mining and mineral research were transferred, primarily, to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Scientific & Technical Information Network . 1974-ongoing.

Public STINET is "free of charge and only requires registration upon document ordering. It provides access to citations to unclassified unlimited documents that have been entered into DTIC's Technical Reports Collection since December 1974 as well as some full text reports for those citations. You may order documents online. Public STINET also highlights featured material from the collection to make searches easier." -- from the Web Site
Secure STINET is free and includes everything in Public STINET, but registration is required. Access is provided to a larger selection of documents.
Reports are available from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). The AD number is the NTIS report number.

Department of Energy (DOE)

Energy research has been sponsored by several agencies. From 1946-1974 energy research was coordinated by the Atomic Energy Commission ( AEC ). In 1975, AEC ceased and the responsibilities were split and transferred to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission ( NUREG ) and the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA). In a 1977 consolidation, ERDA became part of the Department of Energy (DOE).

The Information Bridge consists of full-text documents produced and made available by the Department of Energy National Laboratories and grantees from 1995 forward.

Energy Citations Database

Contains bibliographic records for energy and energy-related scientific and technical information from the Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessor agencies, the Energy Research & Development Administration (ERDA) and the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
The Database provides access to DOE publicly available citations from 1948 through the present, with continued growth through regular updates. Energy Citations includes bibliographic records of literature in disciplines of interest to DOE such as chemistry, physics, materials, environmental science, geology, engineering, mathematics, climatology, oceanography, computer science and related disciplines. It includes citations to report literature, conference papers, journal articles, books, dissertations, and patents.

EnergyFiles: The Energy Science and Technology Virtual Library Environment

EnergyFiles provides access to a wide variety of energy-related scientific and technical information.
Links are provided to "information collections, electronic journals and preprints, applied and engineering standards, database and document delivery services, and regulatory, funding and reference material."

LIBRARY HOLDINGS

The Library received DOE depository technical report collection on microfiche and also has some reports available in paper. Distribution of DOE publications on microfiche was discontinued in September 1996.
