Where to Get Ideas

Current newspapers and magazines are good place to find ideas for topics to investigate. Listed below are some of the more readable magazines that deal with earth and environmental science topics. The most recent issues are kept in the Current Periodicals area on the First Floor of Love Library.

The National Geographic Society website brings together a wide range of resources, including an online version of National Geographic. There are sections for Kids and for Educators.

1st Floor - Newspapers; especially the Quest section on Wednesdays
The online Science section draws together all the science stories that have appeared in the print newspaper.
Los Angeles Times
1st Floor - Newspapers; especially the Science File in the Monday main section
The online Science & Medicine section pulls together all the science and medical stories that have appear throughout the week, but lacks the illustrations of the print version.

Background Resources

As you look through these sources listed here, keep an eye out for the following information to help you in locating additional resources:

  • Terms and phrases used to describe your topic. The English language uses many synonyms.
  • Identify parameters such as geographic location, ecological environment, the scientific name of any plant or animal
  • Identify important researchers or advocacy groups
  • Other books and journal articles suggested by these resources
CQ Researcher
This online resource provides good overview and background reports on topics currently in the news. It is particularly useful for identifying the key advocacy groups associated with the topic in question.

Well illustrated with simple descriptions. Covers from bacteria to global weather patterns. Also found in this same series (The New Encyclopedia of Science) is Earth and Other Planets: Geology and Space Research by Peter Cattermole. (New York: Oxford University Press, 1995. QB 631 C37 1995 fo 5th Floor / Oversized.)
Earth Science. James A. Woodhead, editor. Pasadena, Calif.: Salem Press, 2001. 5 volumes.
QE 28 E12 2001 Reference
Consists of 5 themed volumes. Volume 1 is "The Physics and Chemistry of Earth." Volume 2 is "The Earth's Surface and History." Volume 3 covers "Earth Materials and Earth Resources." Volume 4 is "Weather, Water, and the Atmosphere," and volume 5 covers "Planetology and Earth from Space." Three to seven page articles that include definitions, illustrations, and an annotated bibliography. A very good place to start.

Maps of every natural and unnatural feature of California. Although produced in 1979, it still provides a unique set of views of the Golden State.
2005/2006 Conservation Directory. 50th edition. Washington, D.C.: National Wildlife Federation / Island Press, 2005.
S 920 C64 50th ed. 2005/06 Reference
Listings and descriptions of government and non-government conservation organizations from the national to the local level. Updated annually.
