Library Research in Earth Sciences Education
Prepared by Anne Turhollow for Geological Sciences 412
Revised Spring 2006
Searching for Infomation
Magazine and journal articles serve as a major form of communication. They
can be more quickly produced than a book and cover very specific topics.
You will usually need to search more than one index to find all the articles
you need. The ones focusing on the field of education are a good source
for curricular ideas and teaching methods.
The individual databases are described below; the accompanying chart
allows you to select the best one based on the type of information you
are trying to find.
General Indexes
- ProQuest
databases
- Off-campus access requires SDSU ID number.
- The ProQuest system can search all of its databases simultaneously,
so you can search newspaper articles in addition to the magazine
and journal articles.
- The Research Library indexes (in some cases back to 1971) 2000
journals in all disciplines, covering both popular and research
titles. Fulltext (for some titles back to 1986) for 1400 titles
is available.Links are provided for articles which have fulltext
in other resources or in print.

- The Newsstand indexes over 150 newspapers from around the world, providing
full-text of the articles in many cases. Accompanying graphics and photographs
are not included. Include the San Diego Union Tribune. However because
of the Supreme Court decision in Tasini vs. New York Times,
the Union Tribune has removed all fulltext prior to January 1, 2000.

- Academic Search Premier (EBSCO)
- Off campus access requires SDSU ID number.
- Indexes some 8200 magazines and journals from 1990 to date (however
some go back to 1969). Covers all disciplines. Many of the articles are
available fulltext online.
Links are provided for articles which have fulltext
in other resources or in print.

Local Resources
While the national magazines and journals can provide an overview of issues and problems, newspapers and local government web sites can provide the local angle.
Education Sources
- Education
Abstracts Full-Text
- 1983 to present. Off-campus access requires SDSU ID number.
- Indexes, abstracts, and provides selected full-text of articles
in more than 400 education journals. Fulltext begins in 1996, but
as with other databases links are provided to articles which have
fulltext in other resources or in print.

- ERIC via
CSA (preferred), via FirstSearch,
via US Dept of Education(free access to all)
- 1966 to present. Off-campus access for CSA and First Search requires
SDSU ID number.

- Index to journal articles as well as documents produced by universities,
school districts, state and county offices of education.
- Links are available to the electronic fulltext
of some 80% of the ERIC documents published since 1993.
World Wide Web Resources
- Librarians Index to the Internet
- A carefully selected and annotated directory of several thousand sites.
The sites are chosen for their usefulness to public libraries in California.
The most useful selections for science education are: Education, Kids, and
Science. The next three sites below were found using this directory.
- Kathy Schrock's
Guide for Educators
- Kathleen Beck Schrock is currently the District Technology Department Head
for the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District on Cape Cod, MA. She has
been selecting and compiling these resources since 1995. In addition to her
subject directory, thereŽs a great collection of resources for teaching critical
evaluation. Because this site is hosted by the Discovery Channel, there is
advertising.
- Blue Web'n Applications
Library
- Part of the SBC (formerly Pacific Bell) Knowledge Network Explorer, this
is a directory of good tutorials, web activities, and other sites for K-12
education.
Some
of the Science sites listed were created in the Poway Unified School District.
- EE-Link: Environmental Education on the
Internet
- A project of the North American Association
for Environmental Education. Not all sites listed are free; some sites
are for materials that must be purchased. It does have a Spanish language
section.
- American Geological Institute
- Education Department
- Includes portions of curricular material they have developed for middle
school, high school, and college level classes.
- USGS Learning Web
- A nice but small collection of resources from the United States Geologic
Survey. In spite of their name, the USGS now carries out research on both
geological and biological topics.
- San Diego Science Alliance
- A local organization concerned with improving and increasing the opportunities
for science education in San Diego County. Be sure to check out their resource
catalog.
And finally two general sites:
- Best
Search Tools
- A single page
providing links and search hints for all the major search engines and
metasearch engines.
- Bare
Bones 101: A Basic Tutorial on Searching the Web
- If you're baffled by all the Internet jargon you hear or want to
improve your search techniques, then here's a quick way to do it.
