Library Research in Ecology
Prepared by Anne Turhollow for Biology 354L
Fall 2002
Locate background information in:
Advances in ecological research (QH 540 A23 5th Floor Books)
Advances in marine biology (QH 91 Al A22 5th Floor Books)
Annual
review of ecology and systematics (QH 540 A53 5th Floor Books and Online)
Evolutionary biology (QH 366 Al E9 5th Floor Books)
Marine ecology (QH 541.5 S3 K5 5th Floor Books)

Finding Information in Journal Articles
Use periodical indexes and abstracts to find other recent articles on your topic.
Remember that off-campus access requires a current SDSU ID number. The best for
ecology are:
-
Academic Search Premier (EBSCO)
- A basic fulltext index going back to 1984.
- Indexes over 2800 core English language periodicals in all discplines.
- JSTOR
- Fulltext archive of over twenty of the key journal journals in ecology
(includes other disciplines as well.)
- Coverage is from first volume published to latest three to five years.
- Biosis
- Earlier years in print Biological Abstracts, QH 301 B37,
Reference for 1970-1997, 5th Floor Periodical for 1926-1969.
- Most comprehensive database for the biological sciences indexing over
8,000 journals as well as conference proceedings and books. Covers all areas
of the biological sciences, both pure and applied.
- Zoological Record
- Library access only, 1993-to date.
- Earlier years in print, QL 1 Z64, Reference for 1970-1994, 5th Floor Periodicals
for 1865-1969.

and society reports from around the world. Best place to start if you are
looking for information on an animal.
- ingenta
- 1989-to date.
- Indexes articles from 14,000 journals in all disciplines. Can only search
by author, article title, keywords in article titles.
- Article
First
- 1990-to date.
- Similar to ingenta.
Most of these indexes are linked to our holdings; look for the link to search
the PAC.
If you locate one or more "key" works, use the citation indexes to find more recent
articles on your topic. A citation index allows you to trace research forward
in time.
- Web
of Science
- 1999 to date
- Earlier years found in the print Science Citation Index,
Q 158.5 S34 Reference, 1955-2001.
The SDSU
Periodicals List is a comprehensive list of all periodicals (magaznines,
journals, newspapers) the Library has access to, in either print or electronic

If the Library does not have a journal article that you need, use Interlibrary
Loan to obtain a copy of the article.
Please allow one to two weeks for delivery. This service is free to SDSU students,
faculty, and staff.
If the Library does not have a book that you need:
- Try Circuit. Takes overnight; pick
up books at Circulation Desk.
- If not on Circuit, then try Link+.
Takes 3 - 5 working days; pick up material at Circulation Desk.
- If not on SD Circuit or CSULink, then use ILL.
- Scirus
- A search engine that includes both electronic journal articles as well as
scientific web sites. Journal articles can be read if SDSU has a license to
access the content.
- CSU Bioweb
- A broad collection of sites in the biological sciences
- NBII - National Biological Information Infrastructure
- This will ultimately be the hub for all biological information in the United States.
- Scout Report Archives
- A selection of high quality information resources
- WWW Virtual Library - Ecology and Biodiversity
- Focus is on conservation
- Ecological Monitoring and Assessment
Network
- Includes methods for monitoring biodiversity in variety of environments.
- Checklist of Online
Vegetation and Plant Distribution Maps
- Links are arranged in a geographic hierarchy.
