Introduction

Accounting is more than just bookkeeping writ large. It is one of the largest self-regulating (well, not as self-regulating as it used to be!) industries in the world. The history and impact of accounting goes back to the pre-Sumerian Middle East, and some even credit double-entry bookkeeping as one of the main causes of the Renaissence. While accounting can seem dull and tedious to the uninitiated, there is much to interest and entertain students of business and history. However, sometimes the complexity and detail of accounting rules and procedures can be daunting, and it is hoped that the following reference sources will help you to find and make sense of the information you are seeking.

Library Catalog and Collections

The first place to start to look for accounting information is on the PAC, the library's online catalog. In addition to the subject "Accounting" here are some more terms you can look up in the PAC:

Journals in Accounting

The library subscribes to many accounting journals in print, and even more in electronic format. To see what journals the library has access to, go to the PAC and enter the subject "Accounting - Periodicals." Many of the titles you find will have links to the online format.

In order to determine if the library has access to a specific accounting journal, go to the PAC and enter the name of the journal as a periodical title. If we have a print subcription to the journal, or if we have electronic access through an online subscription or one of our online journal vendors, this search will tell you and provide links to further information or the journal itself. Below are just some of the accounting journals you can find in the library or through the library's web site:

Access to Articles on Accounting

The easiest way to find recent articles on accounting is to use the ABI/Inform database. It provides access to and often the full text of articles in the professional accounting literature. If ABI/Inform does not contain the full text of an article you can always look in the PAC to see if we have access through a print subscription, or electronically through some other database.

The following two print indexes provide much more detailed indexing of the professional accounting literature, and will take you back to 1936, something the databases can't as yet do.
