Introduction
This guide is intended to serve as a general introduction to research in anthropology, using both print
and electronic resources, especially those made available by San Diego State University (SDSU) Library.

Reference Books (see also the PAC)
There are three types of anthropology reference books in Reference Services
(1st floor, Library Addition) or the book stacks. These are
dictionaries and encyclopedias, literature guides, and
biography.

- Archaeological Method and Theory: An Encyclopedia.
- Has an introduction and subject guide. Entries include references
and further readings. There are also subject and name indexes.

- Cambridge Encyclopedia of Archaeology.
- Includes chapters on "The development of modern archaeology" and
"Framework: dating and distribution." Also includes chapters on world
regions and time periods. Has a chronological atlas, bibliography,
further reading, and a subject index.

- Encyclopedia of Anthropology.
- More a dictionary than an encyclopedia, this contains brief
entries, most of which include bibliographies. Cross-referenced.

- A 4-volume set with 340 entries. Entries include bibliographies
and are cross-referenced. Covers all fields of anthropology. Volume 4
has an appendix listing anthropology periodicals and an index to the

- Encyclopedia of the Stateless Nations: Ethnic and National Groups Around the World.
- A 4-volume set with entries listed by cultural group names. Entries include information
on topics such as People and Culture, Language, Religion, and History and also include

- A 3-volume set of cross-referenced entries with bibliographies. Volume 1 includes

- Each of the four volumes of this set is devoted to a region of the

- Annual Review of Anthropology. 1972- .
- Provides broad summaries of recent literature. Includes extensive
bibliographies. This annual superseded Biennial Review of
Anthropology (1959-1971) [CALL #: Z5112.B56 (through 2003)]. All volumes of the
Biennial Review of Anthropology and most volumes of the
Annual Review of Anthropology are archived on the Internet
at JSTOR.
Annual Reviews and

both provide online access to recent years of the

Sources.
- Includes sections on the subfields of anthropology, area studies,
and a variety of specialized topics and resources. Indexed by author,

- The contents is divided into access by discipline with an emphasis
on theory and access by area studies with an emphasis on empirical

before 1920. Includes a glossary and an index.

- The Routledge Dictionary of Anthropologists.
- Provides a who's who of anthropologists from the birth of the discipline to the present day. Chapters are
arranged by national traditions and schools of thought. Includes cross-references, selected bibliographies, and is indexed.

the PAC
Books are listed in the PAC (the Library's catalog) by author,
title and subject. Books on anthropology are found under "Anthropology" and its various subheadings.
Books on the anthropology of particular societies may be found under the name of the society. Related
subject headings include "Acculturation," "Archaeology," "Cross Cultural Studies," "Ethnology," "Folklore,"
"Linguistics," "Human Geography," and "Physical Anthropology." Most non-reference books on anthropology are
located on the 3rd floor book stacks, many with a call number beginning with GN.

Periodicals are listed in the Library catalog, the PAC, by title. Use the

Articles in periodicals can be searched using the following anthropology periodical indexes and abstracts in

- Abstracts in Anthropology. 1970-2004.
- Provides summaries of articles from mostly English language
periodicals . Bimonthly issues focus on either linguistics and cultural
anthropology or archaeology and physical anthropology. Indexed by
subject and author.

- Harvard University. Tozzer Library. Anthropological
Literature. 1979-1992.
- Quarterly issues are arranged by the subfields of anthropology.
They cover not only periodicals but various types of edited works as
well. Subject and author indexes are cumulated annually. The years 1979
to 1983 are in paper on Table 12. The years 1984 to 1988 are on
microfiche (C-2412 Ref). The years 1989 to 1992 are in paper. This
index continues Catalogue: Author and Catalogue: Subjects

- For many years all periodical articles received by the Peabody
Museum Library were cataloged. Published in 27 volumes in 1963,

Ingenta (Periodical) Article Delivery Service
The Ingenta Article Delivery Service provides SDSU faculty, staff, and graduate
students with free delivery via fax machine of full-text articles from approximately 18,000 journals dating back
to 1988 (providing the copyright holder allows faxing, and the total cost of the article is not more than $50).

The HRAF is a collection of primary, mostly published, source material. An important tool for
cross-cultural research, it is on microfiche (C-2493) through 1992 in the Current Periodicals and Microforms
Center (CP&MC). Indexing is provided by the following two sources:
- Outline of Cultural Materials. (5th revised edition)
- This is the subject index of the HRAF. The
alphanumeric designations have the same meaning in each of the cultural
files.
