What does SFX do?
SFX provides direct links from a database citation to the
full text of the article (if available) and other helpful options. Options will change
from citation to citation. When available, SFX will link to
one or more of the following:
- full text of the article
- an automatic search of the PAC, the San Diego
State University Library Catalog
- a link to Interlibrary Loan forms
How do I access
SFX?
The library holds subscriptions to various online databases.
Some of these are SFX-enabled (See the
list below). When you find a citation in one of these
databases, click on this button:

In some databases you will see a button that looks like this: or you'll see a link with the words Find Full Text or OpenLink (SFX) instead of the standard button.
This will open a window with a menu of options
for accessing the full-text of the article and other choices.
(Note: in some databases you may see a link that says "Find
Full Text" instead of a button).
Can
I access SFX from off campus?
Students, faculty, and staff of SDSU can access SFX from off
campus. You may be asked for your name and University ID.
Why are there
multiple links to full-text?
Sometimes an article is available through several full-text
services. In this case, we often provide you with several
options. We list them with the most recommended services first.
These most recommended services are those that provide you
with features such as direct access to the article, PDF images
of articles, and email service when possible.
Why don't I always
get directly to the article?
Some full-text databases don't allow SFX to link directly
to the article. In this case, you'll either get to a page
displaying all volumes of the journal, where you'll have to
navigate to the volume and issue you need, or to the front
page of the database, where you'll have to search for the
journal you need.
Why is the full
text not always available?
The full-text option appears only when the Library owns that
item. We don't subscribe to all titles, and not all titles
are available online.
If the full-text
doesn't display, is it not available?
Not necessarily. Some full-text databases cannot be used with
SFX. If the full-text link does not display, click on the
Periodicals
Locator link to search both print and electronic holdings
subscribed to by our library.
What if I click
to get to full-text and my article isn't there?
On occasion, a full-text service may be having problems or
SFX may be in error. When this happens, check the Periodicals
Locator and please email
a librarian so that we can correct the error.
Why do I fail to
see the SFX menu in SFX-enabled resources?
Software such as Pop-up Zapper and Pop-up Stopper (both of
which turn off pop-up ads) turns off SFX as well since SFX
uses a pop-up window. If you have such software installed
on your computer, you will need to turn it off in order to
see the SFX menu.
Why don't I see any SFX Icons?
The most likely cause is that you have JavaScript disabled in your browser. If it's turned off, the SFX button won't appear. Re-enable JavaScript and everything should be fine.
Not all databases have the capability to use SFX. If you see the SFX button in some databases and not others, your JavaScript preferences are most likely not the explanation.
What if I am looking for a particular article? (the Citation Linker)
You can use the Citation Linker to find out if we have access to articles. Simply type in all the information that you have about the article (more is better).
Still can't find what you're looking for?
If you are having trouble finding what you want, technical difficulties using SFX, or want to comment on the service please email a librarian or visit the reference desk.
