Mapping ACRL Standards to Department-Specific Learning Outcomes

Librarians are available to help departments map department objectives and current practices to ACRL's Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. The following resources may help your department begin mapping standards:

General Education Curriculum

SDSU's GE curriculum guidelines require that information literacy be addressed in all proposals for new courses.


CSU Information Competence Initiative Grants

Each year, the CSU system awards grants to collaborative teams of departmental and library faculty to encourage the incorporation of information literacy into the curriculum. Past SDSU grant awardees and campus projects include:

E-Competency:  Integrating Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) within the Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation Curriculum.  Dr. Vinod Sasidharan, Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism; Marilyn E. Hall, Library and Information Access; and, Pamela Jackson, Library and Information Access.   $16,500.  Current Grant:  2006-2008. 

Information Competence for Accounting Majors: A Web-Based Tutorial on Accessing and Assessing Business Information. Carol Venable (Accounting), Gretchen Vik (Information and Decisions Systems), and Michael Perkins (Library).

W5 + H = Web Presentation for Journalism Students. Carolyn Baber (Library) and the Journalism Department.

Information Literacy Standards in a Doctoral Program: Forming an Integrated Definition of Competence. Marlowe Berg (Education).

Information Competence at SDSU [creation of the web-based library tutorial, Research Tutor]. Gene Lamke (Director, Freshman Success Program), and Marilyn Hall, Bruce Harley, Patrick Sullivan (Library).


Discipline-Specific Information Literacy Articles

An increasing number of discipline-specific information literacy articles have been written in recent years. Ilene Rockman, Manager of the CSU Information Competence Initiative, maintains an updated bibliography of discipline-specific information literacy articles entitled, Integrating Information Competence into the Disciplines.
