Information Literacy Assessment
Student Learning Outcomes
Librarians are available to help departments and individual faculty members
incorporate information literacy learning outcomes into departmental curriculum
or individual courses. Please contact your librarian
liaison or the Information
Literacy Librarian for more information.
Accrediting Agencies
Many university- and program-level accrediting agencies have made information
literacy a priority. For example, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges
(WASC) states: “Baccalaureate programs engage students in an integrated
course of study of sufficient breadth and depth to prepare them for work, citizenship,
and a fulfilling life. These programs also ensure the development of core learning
abilities and competencies including, but not limited to, college-level written
and oral communication; college-level quantitative skills; information literacy;
and the habit of critical analysis of data and argument” (WASC Handbook
of Accreditation).
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and ETS
In collaboration with the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the CSU system
and other universities have developed a large-scale, web-based, problem-based
assessment tool for information and communication technology. This simulation-based
testing program measures students' abilities to define, access, manage, integrate,
evaluate, create and communicate information in a technological environment.
The ICT
Literacy Assessment is now available for use via ETS.
