Dr. Shu Yun & Lillian Chan

Upon the occasion of her retirement, Library faculty member Lillian Chan and her husband, Dr. Shu Yun Chan, have made a very generous gift to the University Library. The Chans share a love for San Diego State University. "We are very happy for all the years we spent here," says Lillian. "We were ready to retire, but we also remember all the nice things that we may have taken for granted after coming to this country as immigrants. Now we finally have a chance to give something back." At their request, the Chan's gift will be used to create a faculty study on the fifth floor of Love Library, in the Science Division.

Lillian Chan, health sciences librarian, retired from the SDSU Library in August 1998 after 30 years of dedicated service. She began her career in the Library in 1968, as a serials cataloger. Her strong interest in public service found its first expression in 1971, when she became a member of the General Reference Division. Lillian spent seven years there, including five as head of the department. In 1978, she transferred to the Science Division, where her nursing degree and knowledge of the health sciences were quickly appreciated. She also served as division head in Science, from 1981 to 1991.

During her long career, Lillian was a very active professional. She regularly participated in the Library's instruction program, teaching students the intricacies of library research. She also established strong professional relationships with the faculty in Nursing and Public Health. In addition, Lillian produced a number of publications related to those fields including an article in the prestigious American Journal of Public Health. She was involved in the Medical Library Association and several other professional organizations.

Lillian's husband, Shu Yun Chan, was a Professor of Electrical Engineering in the SDSU College of Engineering from 1965 to 1978. Although he was a scholar and served as a well-respected head of the department for two terms, above all "he loved teaching", as Lillian puts it.
