SDSU Library Council
Activities, Actions and Advisory Role:
Library Council is an advisory body to the Dean of Library and Information Access. In a spirit of shared governance,
Council's activities and actions involve Library strategic planning, leadership and the consideration
and discussion of Library-wide issues.
Council leads the strategic planning process through the creation and oversight of strategic planning task forces
developed to address the Library's response to trends in the Library profession and to meet the
challenges of an ever-changing world of information, technology, and users. Council develops charges
for the task forces and accepts, reviews, and ratifies task force reports so that the Library continues
to aspire to the highest quality in service, instruction, collections, staff, and physical environment.
Furthermore, Council consults with faculty, staff, students, the Senate Library Committee, the Friends
of the Library and others and solicits their feedback to identify the nature of present and future
challenges and opportunities.
Council acts as a leadership body by identifying, reviewing and responding to challenges based upon
a shared vision that is in concert with the Library's mission and service pledge. Council acts in
its advisory capacity by responding to requests from the Dean or by itself presenting issues of
concern. Council strives to be a consensus-builder and works to communicate the rationale of its
decisions and to persuade the Library community that these decisions are based upon a vision that
is shared and cohesive.
Council also acts in the consideration and discussion of important Library-wide issues and concerns.
Council monitors and takes into consideration the impact of issues and concerns felt throughout
the organization as a whole vs. issues affecting a single Library department. Council monitors
and considers concerns but does not necessarily arbitrate issues.
Library Council is firmly committed to the Library's standard of excellence that places patrons
and their needs at the core of everything the Library does.
