  The Singular Journey of Edward Gorey

Visit a world both perilous and magical. ”From prodigy to Polymath: The Singular Journey of Edward Gorey” will be on exhibit from March 8 to May 31,2004 , in the Donor Hall. Gorey authored more than 100 works, including The Gashlycrunb Tinies, The Doubtful Guest and The Wuggly Ump ; prize-winning set and costume designs for innumerable theater productions from Cape Cod to Broadway; and a remarkable number of illustrations in publications such as The New Yorker and The New York Times ; as well as the animated credits for the PBS “Mystery” series.

Andreas Brown and Peter Neumeyer, SDSU emeritus professor of English and Comparative Literature, will give a free presentation on the life and work of Edward Gorey on March 22 at 2 p.m. in Room LA2203. Neumeyer is renowned in the world of children's literature for his insightful, scholarly works, and three of his own books were illustrated by Edward Gorey.   Explore SDSU: Open House 2004

As part of SDSU Month, the library will offer tours on March 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also on that date, library “experts” will be present to share advice about the care and restoration of books.

  Poetry by Peter Pereira

Peter Pereira will present a poetry reading as part of the Hugh C. Hyde Living Writers Series on Wednesday, March 24, at 7 p.m. in Room LA2203. Pereira is a family physician in Seattle and a founding editor of Floating Bridge Press. He won a 1997 Discovery/The Nation Award and has received poetry awards from Artist Trust, Seattle Arts Commission, and the king County Arts Commission. His first chapbook, The Lost Twin , was published by Grey Spider Press in 2000.

   Jane Tassi Presents a Reading

San Diego poet Jane Tassi will present a reading on April 14 at 7 p.m. in Room LA2203 as part of the Hugh C. Hyde Living Writers Series. Tassi, who received a master's of fine arts degree from SDSU, now teaches at Southwestern College . She is the winner of the 2002 Bordighera Poetry Prize for bilinguall publication of her book AndSongSongSonglessness . Tassi has published poems in Rolling Stone Magazine , Viet Nam Generation, Scents & Sense and the Birdcage Review; LOESS , a collaborative art and poetry book, and two broadsides were published by Brighton Press.

    An Evening with Susan Vreeland

San Diego author Susan Vreeland will read from her work and share her thoughts about writing on April 8 at 7 p.m. in Room LA2203 as part of the Hugh C. Hyde Living Writers Series. Vreeland, an SDSU graduate, is the author of The Passion of Artemisia, The Forest Lover, and Girl in Hyacinth Blue , which was adapted for television by Hallmark Hall of Fame and renamed Brush with Fate.

  Friends of the Library Luncheon

SDSU alumnus and Gotham Book Mart owner Andreas Brown will be the guest speaker at the Friends of the Library Luncheon on March 20, 2004 . Brown will discuss the life and works of writer/illustrator Edward Gorey in a speech titled “Fun and Games: Enigmas and Mysteries in the Texts and Art of Edward Gorey.” Brown was a friend of Gorey's for many years before the artist's death in 2000.
