People are called to their professions by different things; for Robert Ray,
the new head of Special Collections and University Archives, it was a letter. "The first collection I
processed as an archivist contained a letter from my mother before I was born. From that letter I
learned something I could not have learned any other way. I've been compelled to work in places like
libraries that hold such things ever since," Ray said.
Ray's interest in archives and special collections began when he was interning with the Western Reserve Historical
Society while pursuing a master's degree in history at Cleveland State University. He received his MLIS degree
from Kent State University in 1997. Prior to joining the SDSU Library last August, Ray served as a special
collections librarian from 1999 to 2006 at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
In his new position, Ray plans to "provide leadership that maintains and strengthens the already distinguished
collecting, preservation, and instructional programs in the library's Special Collections." He also wants to
increase the awareness and use of Special Collections materials for teaching and research, especially among
the SDSU and research communities. One of his main goals is "to have all hands go up when students are asked
'How many of you know of or have been to the library's Special Collections'."
