  Accessorize with School Spirit

You may have noticed women on campus wearing a beautiful red, black, gold, and white scarf featuring SDSU architectural landmarks. The scarf is the brainchild of SDSU alumna and Friends of the Library Vice President Elisabeth Kenney Ecke. The idea of creating an SDSU-themed garment came to Ecke while shopping at the SDSU Bookstore several years ago. "I noticed that there were several different SDSU neckties for guys, but nothing for the ladies," Ecke said.

Recognizing that an SDSU-themed scarf could also be a good fundraising tool, Ecke sought someone to help her create the garment. She contacted Marilyn and Cecy Jones, owners of J & J Designs in San Francisco, who had designed scarves for other organizations such as the San Francisco Ballet Company and the Junior League of San Diego, and invited them to visit the SDSU campus. "I spent the day with them, taking photos and walking around campus. It was interesting how they noticed details. I guess it takes an artist's eye," Ecke said.

One of the details the artists noticed was the disk featuring Monty and the San Diego Normal School (now SDSU) located on the floor between the Professional Studies and Fine Arts Building and Hardy Memorial Tower. They included an image of the disk on the scarf, as well as hand-drawn illustrations of Scripps Cottage, Hepner Hall, Hardy Memorial Tower and the old library, and the library dome.

The scarves are made of 100 percent silk and can be purchased from the SDSU Bookstore and at Aztec Store in the Fashion Valley Mall. Proceeds benefit the SDSU Library and Information Access and the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts.
