An Oasis of Learning
A new San Diego State University student strolled into SDSU's Imperial Valley (IV) campus library on the first day of classes last fall and exclaimed, "Wow, this is really cool!" Though the air conditioning was a relief from the 110-degree day, it was the library that the student was impressed with. Located in Calexico, which is 120 miles east of San Diego and nearly at sea level, SDSU's IV campus library might surprise you as well.

The library on SDSU's Imperial Valley campus has been serving a largely Hispanic student population since 1959. With more than 100,000 volumes, more than 250 periodical subscriptions, Internet access and word processing computers, study rooms, media services and a Learning Center, the IV campus library offers students, faculty and the greater campus community all of the library resources and services available at a larger library. And with the support of the San Diego campus library, students are able to request books and journal articles from San Diego and California State University libraries, as well as have access to thousands more journals, magazines and newspapers via periodical databases, many full-text.

The IV campus library is equipped with 28 computers, 15 in a state-of-the-art computer lab where students receive instruction in the use of the library's online catalog, using periodical databases and research methodologies. The library is staffed with a reference librarian, two library assistants and a number of indispensable student assistants.

In addition to all the normal functions of a university library, the IV campus library is often a venue for campus events, lectures and community forums. The library also houses the Border Collection; similar to the SDSU Library's Chicano Collection, the IV campus' Border Collection has books and periodicals covering the wide spectrum of environmental and historical issues affecting the greater Imperial Valley and Mexicali Border region.

SDSU's IV campus library is located in one of the world's lowest and hottest deserts. Amid rich agricultural pastures, creosote bush and a heavily used border crossing, the IV campus library is a genuine academic oasis. If you find yourself in Calexico on a hot summer's day, step into the library, it's really cool!
