Prominent Community Leaders Join Friends Board

"The Friends of Love Library are extremely pleased to welcome six new members to the Board of Directors to share in the existing board's enthusiasm to assist the library. Our new board members include Virginia Kirkland Butler, Tommy Carroll, Carolyn Conner, Robin Luby, Estelle Milch and Carole Scott," said Barbara Hartung, emerita professor of journalism and president of the Friends of the Library Board.
Kirk Butler Kirk Butler
Kirk Butler is a graduate of Stanford University and the University of California, San Diego. She is a member of Scholia, which is a prestigious discussion club, and has served on many local boards, including the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of Photographic Arts and the Old Globe Theatre. She has researched and given papers at the Wednesday Club and in the community on various authors and sculpture and is an accomplished amateur photographer.
Tommy Carroll Tommy Carroll
Tommy Carroll is a lifelong resident of La Jolla. He was a commercial airline pilot for 36 years and retired at the level of a 747 captain. Captain Carroll took a leave of absence from flying in 1970, and he and his wife, Jean, sailed the South Pacific in their sailing yacht for four years. Carroll is active in the San Diego Yacht Club, where he was chair of the Library Committee and oversaw a beautiful renovation of the facility. He has a stunning library in his own home as well, and he is a true bibliophile.
Carolyn Conner Carolyn Conner
Carolyn Conner has volunteered in libraries in a variety of capacities since her high school days. She is interested in environmental issues and is the third generation of her family to be involved in water issues, having served on committees dealing with supply, ground water problems and safety. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Pomona College.
Robin Luby Robin Luby
Robin Luby is a retired English teacher in the Grossmont High School District. She has served in leadership positions in volunteer and professional organizations, most recently as president of the California English Teachers Association. She received a Distinguished Alumna Award from the SDSU chapter of Mortar Board, is secretary/treasurer for the newly formed SDSU College of Arts and Letters Alumni Chapter, and is currently in charge of publications for the San Diego chapter of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS).
Estelle Milch Estelle Milch
Estelle Milch graduated from SDSU in 1969 with a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Health and Human Services. She is a former president of the Wednesday Club and was involved with the Cabrillo unit of the Children's Hospital Auxiliary, served on the Historical Sites Board of the City of San Diego and on the board of the San Diego Historical Society, was a volunteer massage therapist at San Diego Hospice, worked as a health educator at the institute for Health Maintenance and is a member of the Junior League of San Diego.
Carole Scott Carole Scott
Carole Scott is the former dean of the Undergraduate Division and professor emerita of English and Comparative Literature at SDSU. She has authored a number of articles and book chapters, co-authored a book, and served as co-editor of another. She has actively supported the library's collaboration with the Children's Theatre Festival as well as with the ChildrenŐs Literature Program within the College of Arts and Letters. She has served on the executive boards of the Children's Literature Association, of the International Research Society for Children's Literature and of the Nordic Children's Literature Network.


"Each of the new members brings a personal expertise to the board, as well as a love of books, reading and book collecting. We know the new members will complement the current board and add fresh new ideas for expanding the scope of the Friends' organization, particularly in our support of the Library's Special Collections," Hartung said.
