"The first question to be proposed by a national being is, not what is profitable, but what is Right."
From: William E. Channing, Slavery (1835)

In honor of President's Day and visiting lecturer Michael A. Burlingame, Professor of History at Connecticut College and author of numerous books on President Lincoln, Special Collections and University Archives have displayed an exhibit on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War.

The exhibit is comprised of rare and fine books, manuscripts, documents and sheet music and includes several books edited by Professor Burlingame. Also on display are items from the Vince Meades Sheet Music Collection and the Civil War collection, which are housed at SDSU University Archives and Special Collections (4th floor, Library Addition, Room 4410, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.). The exhibit illustrates various historical perspectives on Abraham Lincoln's life, and includes speeches, photographic records of the President, and anecdotal accounts of his presidency written by contemporaries. The dates of these materials range from 1835 to the present.
