Director, Library Information Technologies and Digital Initiatives

San Diego State University Library and Information Access invites applications and nominations for the Director, Library Information Technologies and Digital Initiatives. The successful candidate will collaborate with administration, faculty, and staff to envision and guide library information technology services, as well as the library’s digital initiatives. This senior library management position will lead and communicate a library shared vision which includes collaboration, excellence and innovation throughout the university’s computing environment; demonstrate a command of emerging trends in scholarly information and digital libraries, as well as technology; and be able to work collaboratively in a collegial environment.

The successful candidate will partner with faculty and staff across our campus and throughout the CSU. Important partners include the Center for Teaching and Learning, Instructional Technology Services, pICT, and MERLOT. Ongoing technology-related projects include developing tools to support information literacy projects; charting our course in the emerging world of digital resources and collections; marketing and providing access to electronic services; and developing technology strategies to enhance our presence in the teaching and learning process and to improve facilities. RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director, Library Information Technologies and Digital Initiatives is a member of Library Council; acts as an ambassador for information technology within the Library and to colleagues across campus and the CSU; leads the library’s digital technology initiatives; and supervises a team of 19 professionals including the digital collections, digital technologies and Internet resources librarians, to develop and deliver innovative information technology and digital services. The Director:

  • Participates in developing a shared vision for the future of the library’s information and digital technology programs, including development of new methods of access to scholarly information.
  • Creates and articulates a flexible technology strategy to support the information and digital technology needs of the library and university.
  • Directs individuals responsible for developing and providing technology services and programs in the library and in several other university departments.
  • Supervises area encompassing 700+ PC/Mac computers, 320+ departmental PC/Mac computers, 20 campus level servers, a Student Computing Center and a Media Center with a variety of multimedia resources and equipment.
  • Assesses information and digital technology trends and innovations that will impact library programs.
  • Coordinates and prioritizes resources in support of CSU system-wide technology initiatives.
  • Represents the library in collaborative technology initiatives in the campus and community (local, state, and national) raising the visibility of the SDSU Library and Information Access.
  • Explores innovative applications of emerging information technologies to enhance and expand services and increase the library’s contributions to e-research.
  • Actively participates in activities that will enhance the library’s reputation as a research center, including library development, grant application activities and professional development.
The Director, Library Information Technologies and Digital Initiatives is a key member of the library’s leadership team, participating in budget and resource allocation decisions, as well as strategic planning. This key position will participate in guiding development and access for scholarly communication for the nation’s top small research university.

Required Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of progressively responsible management experience
  • Graduate degree in a related field
  • Experience as a team leader and/or mentor
  • Strong project management experience
  • Knowledge of technology trends in academic and library computing fields and an ability to advance the delivery of teaching, learning, and scholarship
  • Skill in identifying and evaluating new technological developments
  • Experience developing successful collaborative partnerships
  • Ability to work with diverse groups with competing interests
  • Demonstrated strong service orientation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a library or academic computing environment
  • Experience leading digital technology programs
  • Experience obtaining and/or managing grants and other external funding

This is a full-time, twelve-month, management position at the rank of Administrator II. Starting salary will be at a minimum of $100,000 commensurate with experience. The San Diego State University Library and Information Access is both a library and home to the largest computing lab on campus, as well as a 24-hour study commons and a multimedia center. The glass dome architecture of the building is a campus landmark. The Library collaborates with partners across campus and the nation to support student learning and success through information technology innovations, including MERLOT, which focuses on resources for online instruction. The 700+ public access computers and wireless access support the use of a large array of technology resources, such as Blackboard, Horizon Wimba, and a variety of other multimedia technologies. Our burgeoning digital initiatives program draws from the rich resources available in Special Collections and University Archives. We provide a collection of over 6.4 million items, including 35,000+ electronic titles. The Library employs 97 faculty and staff, as well as over 180 student assistants.
