Where did surfing begin? What was the first surfing magazine? What is "surfploitation"? How has surfing been depicted in the media over the past one hundred years? These questions and more will be answered in a fascinating and comprehensive exhibit on surfing history and imagery. A wide range of books, magazines (national and international), photographs, posters, music records, and ephemera using materials from the Special Collections and University Archives at SDSU as well as rare and exclusive items on loan from area collectors will be on display in the Donor Hallway and in Special Collections from December 2 through March 16, 2003.

This exhibit was made possible through the generous contribution of San Diego surf collectors Keith Eshelman, Allen Kukel, Daved Marsh and Joe Tabler. Many thanks to them for lending us their precious materials! For their kind donations to our surfing collection we would like to thank Lyn Ollson, Keith Eshelman, Allen Kukel, Daved Marsh and Joe Tabler.

Keith Maynard Eshelman - Gallery of Surf Classics
A virtual museum with more than 200 classic surf movie posters and lobby cards of surfing movies from the '60s.

Daved Marsh - The Water Log
A bibliography of surfing books; articles from non-surfing publications; research papers; technical works; those purely gratuitous uses of surfing images and terminology that Daved has dubbed Surfploitation.

Joe Tabler - Surfbooks.com
The world's best resource for collectible surfing literature.

Allen Kukel
A major collector of early surfing books.
