Corn Husk Dolls

Dolls
A few of Carole's corn husk dolls.

My corn husk doll collection began in 1997 when we were in Kentucky and I bought a doll made of wheat stalks. I became interested in natural plant material and started to watch for them in shops, thrift stores, and garage sales.

After a few friends and relatives found out about this new interest they started to bring me some from their travels.

As I read more about these dolls I found they were made in all different corners of the world. When my niece was studying for a semester in Nepal she brought me one from there, and my sister has brought me dolls from China, Mexico, Estonia, and kitchen witch from the Czech Republic. A pair made of flax is from Russia, and many older ones were found in garage sales.

Most of us associate these little dolls with Native Americans and colonial America, but as you can see, they are used and created wherever corn and other fibers are plentiful - all over the world. For many children they may be the only dolls they ever have, and what delightful creatures they are.
