British Music of the 20th Century Mark Lester |
|
| It all started in childhood. My earliest musical experience was listening to my parents' 78RPM recordings; piano lessons and the young people's concerts performed by the San Diego Symphony soon followed. Record and score collecting began with youthful trips to the old Thearle's Music Store on Broadway in San Diego - usually with a side trip to Wahrenbrock's Book House, which was then across the street. |

I learned to love Bach, Mozart, and Brahms, but for some unknown reason, I was especially drawn to British music, initially Purcell and Vaughan Williams. I caught the collecting bug from my piano teacher, Harry L. Anderson, internationally recognized discographer. As an adult and serious collector, I came to focus on 20th century British music; collecting records (now compact discs), scores, books, journals, and ephemera - all on the period from Elgar through Vaughan Williams to Britten and Ades. Regular trips to the UK have provided even more opportunities for digging through second-hand book and music shop. |
