I have a piggy collection.
Yes, that's right, the little porker...in all shapes and
sizes, from figurines to stuffed, on pictures, coffee mugs and trays,
and on tee shirts and magnets.
I grew up on a small family farm in Germany and after
our horses and horse-trading business were displaced by John Deere
and McCormick, my family grew more crops and raised pigs for sale.
Our livelihood depended on having a healthy litter of piglets and
bringing them to market when ready. |

Looking back, I understand how the life
on a farm taught me to honor and appreciate all living things that both
nourish us and enrich our lives in many ways. The memories are strong,
and so are all the times that my family and wonderful friends have presented
me with replicas of my beloved piggies, so I have a gathering of them
and a little part of what was once home.
And the best part is, I don't have to let them go! |
