Beyond Superheroes: Alternative Comics from SDSU's Special Collections
June 12 - August 18, 2006
SDSU Library Addition
Special Collections, Room 4410
Held in conjunction with San Diego’s famous Comic-Con International, Beyond Superheroes: Alternative Comics from SDSU’s Special Collections features works by artist/writer Donna Barr as well as other alternative media and comic book artists.
Donna Barr, an award-winning comic book artist hailing from the Pacific Northwest, bases much of her work on historical people and events. Her drawn book series, The Desert Peach, follows the adventures of Pfirsich Rommel, the fictional gay younger brother of the infamous Nazi leader, Erwin “The Desert Fox” Rommel. Another series, Stinz, takes place in an imaginary society resembling pre-WWI Germany. The characters even speak a German dialect invented by Barr herself.
In 2004, she gave her personal papers to SDSU’s Special Collections. Included in the collection are sketchbooks, scripts, correspondence and the original Black Manuscripts, which are hand-written and illustrated volumes, twelve of which are ornately hand-embroidered on their covers. This exhibit celebrates the first public unveiling of these manuscripts.
Also featured in the exhibit are outstanding examples from our Comics collection including mini comics by Dave Bort and Raina Telgemeier and independent publishing efforts by Alternative Comics, Oni Press and Fantagraphics.
