Artists' books by artists and writers in all media and disciplines studying
with Michele Burgess in "Art of the Book," class 446.

To the left:
Book of Religious Dicta.
No place of publication listed, no date.
This book was donated to Special Collections in the 1970s, but
because of difficulties reading the text, has never been cataloged. It is believed
to be a book of religious dicta and admonishments, and is entirely hand-written.
To the right:
Jenane Abbadi. Red Book. Paper and ink, 2003.
In this book, I zoomed in on the images in the book, "In the Name of God."
I wanted to enlarge the calligraphy to clarify the content.
To the left:
Hugo Ziemann. The Presidential Cook Book: Adapted from the White House Cook
Book. New York: 1904.
To the right:
Wei-Hsiu Huang. Art and the Reality. Watercolor on paper, hardcover
binding, 2003.
My book illustrates the process of becoming an "improved housewife."
I wanted to show the integrated life style of a student who is also a housewife.
In the front:
Sara Soto. The Improved Housewife. Inkjet print, acrylic paint and
ink, 2003.
I chose to contrast the wife-improving beauty tips of the 30s and 40s with a
poem by Maya Angelou entitled "Phenomenal Women" which I have found
empowering.

In the back:
Eleazar Albin. A Natural History of Spiders and Other Curious Insects.
London: 1736.
To the left:
Rikky Samoylenko. Untitled. Paint, ink and colored pencil, 2003.
I imagine this book to be a sketchbook for a biologist. The book was possibly
carried in the pocket of the person studying the life and interaction of bugs
and plants.
To the right:
Sandra Fugi. Fauna en extermino. Pencil on paper, enclosed in arches
cover black, 2003.
In this book I wanted to depict Brazilian fauna which are endangered and pay
a homage to them. Based upon a botanical book.
