True to type: One hundred years of fine printing from Special Collections

March 5 - May 4, 2003

""
Cecil Johnson. A Printer’s Garland: Being a Miscellany of Typographic Fancies. San Francisco, Calif.: The Book Club of California, 1935.

What do William Shakespeare's The Tempest, Kitao Masanobu’s “Holidaymakers in an Iris Garden Listening to a Cuckoo,” and Max Ernst's Histoire Naturelle have in common?

These items are just a few examples of the sumptuous books, woodblock prints and engravings on display in the donor hall of the San Diego State University Library from March 3 through May 4, 2003.

The poetry, natural sciences,
Californiana and literary works highlighted in this exhibit illustrate
that the virtues of handsome printing and typographic design
embrace a variety of genres and subjects. They demonstrate that the pleasures of a well-printed book endure across generations and political or cultural boundaries.
