"Just as all children exist in history, so do all authors of children's
literature. It makes a difference that children's literature is for historical
children. That difference offers the principal reason why the child, the
child's world, and the adult world for which children are being prepared
are as central to the system of children's literature as its aesthetics,
its authors, and their intentions."
From: Ruth B. Bottigheimer: An Important System of Its Own: Defining
Children's Literature.
SDSU's Special Collections hosts a wide variety of children's literature
from the 19th and 20th centuries, and from various countries (Germany,
Mexico, China, and France). For this exhibit, we chose 45 books for display
with toys from the personal collections of SDSU Library staff and students.
