What behind-the-scenes work leads to the production of a play or musical?
It is the intricate process that is briefly described here. First, the
producer or the director selects a script and negotiates with the playwright
(or his or her agent) for its use. Typically, the producer also takes
on the administrative responsibilities of the production and locates financial
backers.

The director conceptualizes the play and collaborates with the stage
manager to coordinate the scheduling of auditions and rehearsals. Once
the cast is selected, rehearsals begin and the costume and set designers
start their work. When the production closes, the technical crew "strikes"
or takes down the set and returns the costumes and props that were used.
The items in this case illustrate but a few of the steps in the production
process.
