The Hispanic Theatre of San Diego was founded by playwright, director,
composer, and painter Jesus Sierra-Oliva in 2000. This non-profit theatre
company presents plays and musicals in English and Spanish. Before establishing
the company, Sierra-Oliva had composed several musical pieces and written
plays, including his first project, The Leaves of Grass Cantata,
an adaptation of works by 19th-century poet Walt Whitman to the Masonic
music of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart completed in 1991,
and the play Blood on Fire (El Fuego En La Sangre): The Passions of
Federico Garcia Lorca staged at San Diego's Diversionary Theatre in
2000. |

Recent productions of the Hispanic Theatre of San Diego include Frida Kahlo, From Hell To Glory (Del Infierno A La Gloria) presented in English and Spanish during the Hispanic Theatre Festival of San Diego in 2001, Adios Mama Carlota, a musical about the lives of the Archduke Maximilian of Austria, the last emperor of Mexico and his wife Carlota, princess of Belgium, and Mariana Pineda, a play by the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, both performed in 2002. |

This display primarily features materials reflecting the history of the
Hispanic Theatre of San Diego-play programs, publicity materials, photographs
of productions, Sierra-Oliva's artist cover made for the video of one
of his stage productions that he has created-as well as an example of
the playwright's images of opera singer Maria Callas, who also inspires
his work. |
