History

In 1969, students from SDSU's Women’s Liberation Group, in cooperation with faculty and community women, formed an ad hoc Committee for Women’s Studies, and collected signatures from over 600 students in support of establishing a Women’s Studies Program.

In 1970, the San Diego State University Senate approved the formal beginning of the department, thus establishing the nation's first Women’s Studies department. Instructors included students, faculty from several existing departments, and one full-time Women’s Studies instructor. A nineteen-person Women’s Studies Board included ten students, three staff members, six faculty members, was established by the ad hoc committee to oversee the program, and proposed creating the Women’s Center. The program officially began in the fall semester of 1970.

In the 1970s, the Faculty Advisory Committee, made up of tenured faculty at SDSU, had the formal responsibility for the department's governance. In the spring of 1974, the Faculty Advisory Committee undertook a nationwide faculty recruitment campaign to strengthen the Women's Studies department. The faculty developed an eighteen-unit minor, which was approved by the University Senate in May 1975. In February 1976 they held a rally called “The Way We Were,” honoring Susan B. Anthony.

In the 1980s, three Women’s Studies faculty attained tenure, rendering the Faculty Advisory Committee unnecessary. In the late 1980s several feminist research institutes were established (by 2000, over 100 existed) and the U.S. Congress, in response to the National Women’s History Project, declared March National Women’s History Month.

In the early 1990s, SDSU experienced a budget crisis, which mandated cutbacks accross the university. The Women’s Studies department was never threatened with the loss of tenured faculty, but non-tenure faculty were severely affected. In 1995, the department celebrated its 25th anniversary with a one-day symposium about the history and future of Women’s Studies.

In 2000, more than 700 Women’s Studies programs existed in the United States. SDSU's department maintained a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research, and started taking a leadership role in college and university affairs. In 2000, the Women’s Studies department began offering admission into its 12-unit Certificate Program through the College of Extended Studies.
