Loan Periods

Loan Periods and allowable renewals vary according to patron, material, and location types. Patron type is defined by your affiliation with SDSU , (i.e. undergraduate, graduate, or faculty, etc.) You must present a valid SDSU ID when borrowing material. Loan periods and allowable renewals are generally:

Status Loan Period Allowable Renewals
Undergraduates 28 Days 3
Graduate Students 84 Days 3
Staff 112 Days 3
Faculty/Doctoral Students 183 Days 1
Research Affiliates 28 Days 2

Renewing Library Material

Material may be renewed from a workstation within the library or from a remote location using a Web Browser by choosing the My Library Record function in the Library Catalog (the PAC) . For detailed instructions please see Instructions for Online Renewal of Library Material. SDSU Library material can also be renewed by bringing materials to the Circulation Desk.

Recalling/Placing Holds on Checked-Out Books

If the book you need is checked out, you can have it recalled (called in from one Library patron for use by another). All books are subject to RECALL after a period of ten days. Recalled books should be returned to the Library within two weeks. When material is unavailable patrons should also consider using LINK+ or Circuit to obtain the item from one of our consortial partners.

A HOLD can be placed, either online or at the Circulation Desk, to reserve an item currently checked out by another borrower. When returned and ready for pickup, you will be notified by e-mail or mail. The item will be held for the requestor for eight days. For further information on these services, please inquire at the Circulation Desk.

Search Services

If you cannot locate a book in the book stacks, present your valid SDSU ID and submit a Request to Locate and Hold Book or Serial form to the Circulation Desk. Staff will search for the book at least three times over a two-week period. If the search is successful the book will be held for you at the Circulation Desk for one week.

If a bound periodical cannot be located in the bound periodicals stacks, complete a green Request to Locate Bound Periodical form at the Circulation Desk. Staff search for a missing bound periodical volume but do not hold it at the Circulation Desk. Each located volume is reshelved in its proper place in the bound periodicals stacks, and you are notified that the requested volume has been located.
