Colección Chicana / Chicano Collection
The Colección Chicana supports study and research in the multidisciplinary field of Chicana/o and Latina/o studies. It serves as a source of information for students, faculty and the public community on the cultural heritage and history of Chicanas/os, Mexicans in the United States, and the U. S. Latina/o experiences, including the Chicana/o struggle for civil rights, Chicana feminism, labor movements, and activism. The holdings of the Colección include books, pamphlets, and selected magazines and newspapers dealing with all aspects of Chicana/o life and culture, including materials on the city and county of San Diego and the Imperial County.
Using the Collection
Reference service is provided by librarians at the Research Assistance desk on the first floor of the Library Addition or by appointment with Cecilia Puerto. The Public Access Catalog (PAC) indexes the Library and the Collection's holdings.
In addition to the materials in the Collection, numerous books concerning Chicanos, Latinos, the Mexican-American border region, Mexico, Central America, and South America are shelved in the Library's general book stacks. Related periodicals may be found in the Current Periodicals and Microforms Center and the bound periodical stacks. Periodical indexes, including the Chicano Database, can be consulted from the Library’s website at http://infodome.sdsu.edu.
Books can be checked out at the Circulation Desk on the first floor of the Library Addition. Pamphlets can be checked out at the Information Desk in the General Reference Division.
Tours of the Chicano Collection can be arranged with advance notice.
